Peach Belt Athletic Trainers Work Together to Save Life of Lander Professor
Greenwood, S.C.-- Prior to the basketball contest on Jan. 20 between Peach Belt Conference members Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) and Lander University, athletic trainers from both institutions were called into action. Daniel Hinely, Armstrong Atlantic's Head Athletic Trainer, and Daniel Hannah, Director of Lander's Athletic Training curriculum, worked together to administer CPR to a Lander faculty member who had become unconscious on the sidewalk outside of Lander's John Drummond Complex.
As the AASU bus arrived on the Lander campus, the bus driver noticed a man fall to the ground on a nearby sidewalk. Hinely quickly left the bus, assessed the man's status, called EMS on his cell phone, and began CPR. The man was not breathing and had suffered a heart attack. The AASU bus driver went inside the nearby Drummond Complex to find additional help and to locate an automated external defibrillator (AED). The AED was secured by Hannah who assisted Hinely with its use as well as assisting with CPR until an ambulance arrived on the scene. The ambulance transported the Lander professor to a nearby hospital and is reported to be doing well. The quick actions of Hinely and Hannah were credited with saving the man's life.
Hinely is the treasurer of the Georgia Athletic Trainers' Association (GATA) and received his undergraduate degree in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training from Valdosta State University and his graduate degree in Health Promotion from Georgia College & State University.
Hannah directs the undergraduate athletic training curriculum in the Department of Physical Education and Exercise Science at Lander and received his graduate degree from East Tennessee State University. Previously, he served as assistant athletic trainer in the Lander Athletics Department.

Cary High School player collapsed
A tragedy was averted this pre-season by the actions of three Wake County Athletic Trainers on August 14th, 2009. A Cary High School player collapsed on the sidelines during a multi-team football scrimmage at Wakefield High School, and within a few minutes required the assistance of CPR and an AED. Kudos to the quick actions of Certified Athletic Trainers Eric Hall (Cary High School), Brent Dorenkamp (Wakefield High School) and Marc Mooney (East Wake High School), and the Wakefield HS team physician Dr. Rosenblum for recognizing the situation and providing medical assistance until EMS arrived. The sophomore high school athlete was successfully revived, transported to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Hall credits the education, practicing for emergency situations and yearly recertification in CPR/AED that he and his colleagues' receive as Certified Athletic Trainers in handling the situation professionally. "I guess you're so trained for it, and then when it happens, you just kick in and do what you're supposed to do," Hall explained. Not only do these three athletic trainers work within the Wake County School system; Eric Hall ’98, Brent Dorenkamp ’98, Marc Mooney ’04 are all East Carolina University Alumni!

MAATA member collapses after being struck by baseball.
Jeff Taylor Sr. collapsed and died after being struck during batting practice with his son on Tuesday April 28, 2009. Taylor was participating with his son on Tuesday afternoon at Lynchburg College’s Fox Field when a line drive hit Taylor near his jaw or throat area, and he collapsed on the pitcher’s mound.
Taylor Sr., 44, an assistant professor of health sciences and kinesiology at Liberty University, was in the process of working on his doctorate in education from Liberty, his wife said, and always had been an avid baseball fan.
Liberty Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. addressed students at Liberty’s convocation Wednesday, saying Liberty had lost a “great professor.”
Liberty students also painted the “Spirit Rock” on campus in memory of Taylor.
“He obviously touched more lives than I was ever aware of,” said his wife Mary Taylor.
The MAATA sends its deepest regrets to the Taylor family.
